The Albury Wodonga Careers in Health Forum is the result of collaboration between the Albury Wodonga Careers Advisors Association, local tertiary education providers and Albury Wodonga Health. The forum is due to take place at La Trobe University, Wodonga Campus on Friday the 2nd May 2025. The event has been run for five years successfully and positively evaluated by participants and careers advisors alike.
The forum aims to bring ‘a hands on’ approach to informing secondary school students about the many diverse career opportunities available in rural health. The forum is aimed at Years 11 and 12 students interested in a career in health. Approximately 300 students are invited to attend from various secondary schools located in the Albury Wodonga area. Places in sessions are limited so please get in early to secure your spot.

Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists are qualified health professionals who in conjunction with other health professionals, assess, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of health conditions and movement disorder through physical methods such as massage, exercise and manipulation.

Nursing
A registered nurse undertakes a minimum of 3 years study at a Bachelor level of Nursing and then obtains a licence to practice as a registered nurse.
National standards give an RN more autonomy in their practice decisions than other nurses.

Speech Pathology
Speech pathologists’ study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speaking, listening, understanding language, reading, writing, social skills, stuttering and using voice. They can work with children, people who have brain injuries or strokes, or who have learning disabilities.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists work with individuals, groups, and communities to achieve optimal health and well-being through participation in the occupations of life, which is a term used to describe all the everyday things we do in our life roles, as well as the things we do to be who we are, to create a meaningful life, and to engage with wider society and culture.

Mental Health
Local mental health services provide specialist clinical assessment, treatment and on-going care to people who have, or who are at risk of a serious mental illness or suicide. Across a range of disciplines, they support people of all ages including people with co-occurring substance use problems. Person centred care is provided through a recovery focused model for both urgent and non-urgent cases.

Exercise Physiology
An exercise physiologist is a Health professional who specialises in the benefits of exercise to help patients get fitter for all around good health, or to treat patients with a medical condition through exercise.

Nutrition
Nutritionists are health professionals specializing in dietary science. They analyze individuals' dietary needs, provide personalized nutrition plans, and educate on healthy eating habits. Working across diverse settings, from hospitals to private practice, they play a crucial role in promoting wellness by fostering balanced and nourishing lifestyles.

Pathways to Health
Explore how to get to your health career. This session will cover both TAFE and university pathways, covering entry requirements and common pathways.

Paramedicine
A paramedic is a healthcare professional who responds to and treats all types of medical and trauma emergencies outside the hospital. Paramedics provide health assessment, initial diagnosis and a treatment plan for patients in crisis before they are referred onto another healthcare professional.

Midwifery
A midwife is a health science professional and registered nurse who deals with the pregnancy, birth and post birth with women. They also assist with reproductive health of women throughout their lives.

Dietitian
The profession of dietetics contributes to the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of illness by optimising the nutrition of populations, communities and individuals. Dietitians utilise scientific principles and methods in the study of nutrition and dietetics, applying these results to influence patients food intake and eating behaviours.

Medicine/GP
A career in general practice gives you the opportunity for a diverse experience in practising medicine. GP's are the first point of contact for patients and will coordinate your healthcare throughout your life. As a GP you can work independently anywhere in Australia.
Medical training is for students that are committed to professional training, passionate about health, biosciences and caring for people.

Radiography
A Radiographer is an Allied Health professional who uses x-rays to produce radiographs of patients to help diagnose the patient’s medical condition.
A radiographer can have a lot of variety in their working day. As well as using x-rays to produce radiographs, they can take CT scans, ultrasounds and MRIs.

Social Work
The social work profession works in areas of human rights and social justice. Social workers work with individuals, families, groups and communities in the context of their physical, social and cultural environments, their past and current experiences, and their cultural and belief systems.

Pathology
The is a form of medical science that involves researching and treating of the essential nature of diseases, especially ones that involve changes in body tissues and organs that cause or are caused by disease.

Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a form of healthcare which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopaths focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a unit.

Psychology
Psychologists take an interest in human behaviour about how people think, feel and react. Using evidence-based practices, psychologists focus on understanding your current difficulties and circumstances and provide you with a tailored, individualised therapy program.

Pharmacy
Pharmacist are healthcare professionals who practice in the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use. Pharmacists interpret and communicate specialised knowledge to patients, physicians, and other health care providers and is licenced to prepare and dispense medical drugs.

Allied Health Assistance
AHA’s provide therapeutic and program-related support to allied health professionals, and to assist patients with their rehabilitation.

Biomedical Science
Biomedical science is a branch of medical science that applies biological and physiological principles to clinical practice. This study provides pathways into medicine, disease research and well as various professional qualifications in the healthcare industry.

Disability Care
A disability worker provides personal, physical and emotional support to people with a disability who require assistance with daily living. They provide assistance everyday activities and often facilitate or assist with outings and other social activities.

Health Promotion
Health Promotion involves tailoring programs using exercise and lifestyle to reduce illness and diseases while also analysing current health trends. You will have the opportunity to work in rehabilitation centres, public health and community organisations.

Podiatry
Podiatrists are experts in foot, ankle and lower limb health. They can help to prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. Some podiatrists specialise in different areas of practice, including sports, children and workplace health.

Prosthetics
Prosthetics is the evaluation, fabrication, and custom fitting of artificial limbs, known as "prostheses." Prostheses enhance the function and lifestyle of persons with missing limbs. The prosthesis must be a unique combination of appropriate materials, alignment, design, and construction.

Naturopath
Naturopaths diagnose, treat and prevent illness through the use of natural medicines and techniques, as well as promoting improved mental health through spiritual and emotional guidance.

Myotherapy
Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy used to treat or prevent soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement caused by muscle dysfunction. A myotherapist treats a wide range of disorders such as sports injuries, tension headaches, poor posture and muscle sprains.

Chiropractor
A chiropractor is a health care professional focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, with a focus on treatment and prevention through exercise, ergonomics and other therapies.
