Try a Trade Day Albury Wodonga 2025

Try a Trade Day is the result of collaboration between the Albury Wodonga Careers Advisors Association, Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP), TAFE NSW, Wodonga TAFE, and industry representatives. The event runs on Friday 28 March at Wodonga TAFE, between 9.30am - 2.15pm.

Try a Trade Day aims to bring ‘a hands on’ approach to informing secondary school students about the many diverse career opportunities available in construction trades. The forum is aimed at Year 10 students interested in a career in this industry. Approximately 250 students are invited to attend from various secondary schools located in the Albury Wodonga area. Places in sessions are limited so please get in early to secure your spot.

Workshop topics

  • Building

    The construction industry is one of Australia’s largest industries. It covers planning and building everything from homes to hospitals and office blocks, to roads and bridges and infrastructure for renewable energy. Sometimes it involves demolition and earthworks.

    Careers in field: Carpenter, builder, foreman, site supervisor.

    Training options: Certificate III in Carpentry, Certificate IV in Building and Construction. Certificate II Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship, Certificate IV Residential Drafting and Advanced Diploma Building Design (Architectural).

    There will be two building workshops.

  • Plumbing

    Plumbers install, maintain and repair pipes, drains, guttering and metal roofing, mechanical services and related equipment for water supply, gas, drainage, sewerage, heating, cooling and ventilation systems.

    Careers in this field: General Plumber, Roof Plumber, Mechanical Plumber, Plumbing Inspector.

    Training options: Certificate II/III in Plumbing, Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services. Variations in Drainage, Fire Protection, Gas Fitting and Roof Plumbing.

  • Electrical

    Electricians have the specific expertise required to install and repair electrotechnology systems. They design, assemble, install, test, commission, diagnose, maintain and repair electrical networks, systems, circuits, equipment, components, appliances and facilities. They are also responsible for renewable energies such as solar, wind, and storage.

    Careers in field: Electrician and Electrical fitter who can then specialise in instrumentation, renewable energy, automation, power transmission.

    Training options: Certificate II in Electrotechnology, Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, Certificate IV in Renewable Energy.

  • Automotive - cars

    Motor Mechanics repair, maintain and test motor vehicle and other internal combustion engines and related mechanical components.

    Careers in this field: Motor Mechanic, Vehicle Parts Interpreter, Motor Vehicle Parts and Accessories Fitter.

    Training options: Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology.

  • Landscape Construction

    Combine hands-on work with creativity with a career in landscape construction. Apprentice landscapers learn about paving, retaining walls, concreting, drainage and plant identification and establishment.

  • Surveying

    Surveyors plan, direct and conduct survey work to determine, delineate, plan and precisely position tracts of land, natural and constructed features, coastlines, marine floors and underground works, and manage related information systems.

    Careers in field: Surveyor, Spatial Science Technician, Architectural, Building and Surveying Technicians

    Training options: Diploma in Surveying, Diploma of Building Design (Architectural), Bachelor of Surveying and Spatial Design.

  • Engineering Fabrication

    Structural Steel and Welding Trades Workers cut, shape, join and repair metal components of iron and steel structures, boilers, pressure vessels and pipes, ships and other vessels.

    Careers in this field: Welder, Fitter-Welder, Metal Engineering Process Worker.

    Training options: Certificate IV in Engineering, Certificate II in Engineering - Production Technology, Certificate II in Engineering Studies

  • Cabinetmaking

    Cabinetmakers craft custom furniture, cabinets, and other wooden fixtures with precision and skill. They will help clients design cabinetry plans, translate this to machinery that cuts pieces out before putting them together and installing onsite.

  • Mechanical Engineering

    Mechanical engineers design and advise on the building and repair of machines, tools and installations. They also investigate problems and faults with machinery, and study ways to improve manufacturing and energy production.
